The City of Palms is the county seat and commercial center of Lee County. It is located in south central Florida nearby the Gulf of Mexico on the Caloosahatchee River and is home to about 60,000 people. The population density is also low with about 1,836 people per square miles. Here, the typical resident is 32 years old, lives in a household of two, and earns a household income of $32,600. The picturesque city gains its nickname largely due to Thomas Edison who planted palm trees along McGregor Boulevard in the early 1900s.  Many followed in his footsteps and the street is now line with palms. According to Organic Style magazine, Fort Myers is the 5th most healthy city in the United States.

The city was once the home of famous neighbors Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, making the Edison and Ford Winter Estates a top attraction. The 17-acre historical museum includes a botanical garden, joining the two winter homes of the famous men. The 105-acre Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium hosts a museum, three nature trails, a planetarium, butterfly and bird aviaries, and picnic areas. Every year, the Winternats R/C car race draws people from around the world to the Lee County Civic Center, bringing excitement and exhilaration.
